West Indies superstar and Kolkata Knight Riders legend Andre Russell has officially announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League after 14 remarkable seasons. The two-time IPL champion will now transition into a new role, joining KKR’s support staff as their Power Coach for IPL 2026.

Russell’s retirement comes shortly after KKR released him ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction, ending a long and iconic association with the franchise he represented for 12 seasons. Instead of entering the auction pool, Russell chose loyalty—declaring he could not imagine wearing the jersey of any other franchise.

Russell: ‘I Want to Leave Behind a Legacy’

In an emotional statement to fans, Russell said the decision to retire came from his desire to leave the field on a high.

“I don’t want to fade out…I want to leave a legacy behind,” he said, adding that fans asking why he retired too early was better than hearing he should have quit years ago.

The all-rounder also admitted that seeing digitally edited images of himself in jerseys of other teams felt unsettling.

“I felt weird seeing myself in any colour other than purple and gold. Those thoughts gave me sleepless nights.”

Transition to KKR’s New Power Coach

Russell revealed that he had been in discussions with KKR CEO Venky Mysore and franchise co-owner Shah Rukh Khan, both of whom have shown unwavering support for his next chapter.

He said the title Power Coach resonated with him:

“When I heard the name, I felt it described me best. The power I bring with the bat, the energy I show in the field—I can help in any department.”

He will continue to play in other global leagues and remain involved with the broader Knight Riders franchise family.

Russell’s Legacy in the IPL

Across 140 IPL matches, Russell compiled an impressive record:

Runs: 2651

Strike Rate: 174.18

Wickets: 123

MVP Awards: 2015, 2019

During his incredible stint with KKR alone, he amassed 2593 runs and claimed 122 wickets, becoming one of the most feared all-rounders in league history.

A Knight Forever

As Russell signs off from IPL cricket but continues his journey with KKR, he leaves behind a legacy defined by explosive hitting, clutch performances, and unbreakable loyalty.

“So Kolkata, I’ll be back… Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo!” he signed off.
